April 2011 - May 2011 update

Once again, because I am so woefully behind, here is a quick and dirty summary of what happened in April and May of 2011. Please pardon me if I have forgotten something significant to you and yours.

  • In April we celebrated the birthdays of Wyatt, Alison, and Brooke. I can't believe that Wyatt, the first of our "triplets" is now five and will be starting kindergarten in the fall.
  • On the second Sunday of April my entire ward was invited to a meeting that included all the single adults (ages 21-31) in Provo and Orem. They renamed all the wards, created single adult only stakes (3 were created,) and then explained that the boundaries and age limits were going to be pretty strict. They encouraged us not to ward hop (not really a problem for me) and that if we were over a certain age that we should go to a home ward or mid-singles ward. As a woman of that age, I've decided to go to a mid-singles ward in Provo as opposed to going to a home ward where there would be a lot less people my age. Our ward has at least 25 people over 30 who will need to find new wards by September 1st. It's been hard but I am sure that we will all eventually be better for it.
  • After much deliberation amongst members of our Board of Directors at work, it was decided that our current CEO would step down and into the role of CTO. A new CEO was brought in on April 19th. It was a shock to most of the company. I now have 4 bosses: the CEO (or Boss R,) the President (or Boss M,) the CTO (or Boss D,) and VP of Strategy and Operations (or Boss L.) Luckily I had two admins assisting me (but more to come on that later.)
  • In May we celebrated the birthdays of Caleb, Dad, and Britnie.
  • My work had their big yearly conference where people from all over the country came to Provo. It was held at the Provo Marriott and I had a heck of a time keeping the schedules for all four of my bosses straight. It was 3 days of non-stop work but we managed to get through it. The event coordinator was 7 months pregnant so a few of us pitched in to do some leg work for her.
  • The next weekend I received a Facebook invite for a friend of mine I hadn't seen in almost 10 years. We lost track of each other when she went on a mission and her parents moved away from Kaysville. Katie and I emailed back and forth and then ended up going to dinner. It was so much fun to catch up (even if we only got through about 5% of what had happened to us.) She, like me, is a biblioholic and loves music and art.

  • I went with a few friends to see Seussical the Musical at the Hale Center Theater. Our friend, Melissa Lindsey, was in the cast and did a wonderful job.
  • Boss D went to Alaska for a week in May which cut down on my workload a little.
  • May 21st was supposed to be the day of The Rapture according to Harold Camping. This American Christian radio broadcaster predicted that May 21st would be the day that Christ would return to the Earth, the righteous would fly up to Heaven, and the wicked would be left on Earth to suffer until October. Clearly this didn't happen. He is still living in his same house and now predicts the end of the world to be October 21, 2011. The saddest part of this whole thing is that many of his followers quit their jobs, sold their homes, and spent all their money in preparation for The Rapture and were pretty shocked on May 22nd when they had to continue on with their lives with no job, house, or money.
  • On May 23rd the ward came over to my house to watch Pixar shorts and have treats. We projected the dvd onto the north wall of the living room and covered the windows with blankets and sheets. It had a movie theater feel to it. A lot of people showed up and several of us ended up downstairs talking instead of watching the dvd. It was a lot of fun.
  • The Center Ward had a May 30th BBQ at Rob's house to celebrate Memorial Day. It was a lot of fun and Rob, Lindsey, Patrick and I ended up shooting hoops and talking.
  • This May was the second wettest May in Provo in the past 30 years. The temperature never got above 81 degrees Fahrenheit.

Holy headache Batman!!!

This past weekend was pretty calm. I spent Saturday cleaning and preparing my lesson for Sunday. One Sunday I taught Relief Society using two November General Conference talks: "Come What May, and Love It" by Elder Wirthlin and ""The Ministry of Angels" by Elder Holland. They are both wonderful talks and I would highly recommend them. "Come What May, and Love It" reminded me a lot of my mom. I used to come home from my sixth grade class and say "Mrs. Noel makes me so mad." My mom would calmly reply "she didn't make you mad. No one can make you mad." It always annoyed me but truer words were never spoken. How we feel and react are things we can control, unlike many other things in this world.

The lesson went well (I think) and I even ended on time. After church my roommates and I made waffles. In fact, this is the first time the four of us have shared a meal. It was a lot of fun. At the end of the meal, Nate came over to join us (and help finish up the waffles.) As a side note, the waffles were in the shape of Hello Kitty and her friends.

Later that night the four of us went to ward prayer (which is like a huge family prayer that a singles ward has on Sunday night.) I wasn't very tired so I didn't go to bed until 11pm. I fell asleep, then woke up after having a nightmare. It took me an hour to get back to sleep and I slept for approximately a half an hour when I was awakened by another nightmare. I had a third nightmare around 4am and a fourth around 7pm. They didn't have a familiar theme or person.
All in all, I got a little less than three hours of sleep on Sunday night/Monday morning. Since I was up at 8am, I called my work and told them that I wouldn't be in. I couldn't go back to sleep so I went grocery shopping. I managed to get two more hours of sleep in the afternoon. At 4pm I remembered that FHE(Family Home Evening) for the ward was at my house and I had to give them a lesson. By then I was working on a nasty headache. I took a shower, did a little lesson prep, and attempted to make myself look good. By 6pm my headache had turned into a migraine headache and I had the distinct desire to decapitate myself. I took more Ibuprofen. At 6:55pm the organizers of FHE arrived and asked to use our oven to cook eggrolls (to celebrate the Chinese New Years.) That was when I found out that our oven and range top wasn't working. Since I had used it the night before, it was a bit of a shock. They left to cook the food at a nearby house while my roommates welcomed ward members to the house.

I gave a 7 minute FHE lesson making the following connections: this is the year of the ox in China, yokes are used on oxen to pull large loads, in Matthew 11:29 we are told to take Christ's "yoke upon us," and to take Christ's yoke upon us is to take Christ's name upon us. I then pointed out three ways in which we can "take the name of Christ upon us." After the lesson, I sat in the kitchen for while sipping water and eating enough so I could take more pain meds without throwing up. A friend of mine, Angie, went and got me some Coke to settle my stomach. I took something to help me sleep at 9:30pm and slept until 7:30am this morning. It's been a long time since I have had a headache that bad. I was nauseous, light sensitive, and exhausted.

I am feeling better now and a repair man for the oven is coming tomorrow. My biggest complaint is that I am now behind at work.

Monday: scary then fun

This has been an interesting Monday. It started out very dull indeed. I did laundry, dishes, and cleaned my room a little bit. I looked at the want ads, then sent some e-mails out. By the time my roommate Camille came home at 4 pm, I decided that I wanted to walk to the library and to the cursed FedEx store to send some faxes. I left home while the sun was shining. As I walked, I talked to my lovely sister on the phone about my life in general, the job hunt, my roommates, and our planned meeting for the next day. (I am so excited to be able to babysit Lauren tomorrow night!) In the library I was able to pick up some children's books in Spanish for my roommate Camille (she is starting to learn Spanish) and then a video to watch sometime this week. As I walked home, I was almost hit by a car on Center Street when an older lady on a cell phone was not paying attention to the color of the traffic lights. It didn't really bother me since this happens almost every time I walk to the library. I stopped by the FedEx store where my favorite "bosses daughter" tried to help me again. I have given her this nickname because the several times she has tried to help me, she seems completely clueless. I would think she is a trainee but she appears to not care that she is unable to run any of the equipment in the store properly. Only a bosses daughter would be able to be so uncaring and incompetent and still have a job. It drives me crazy but cannot be changed.
The next part of my day was very exciting. I was preparing to cross the road that my apartment is on. I stopped at the curb, looked for cars, then stepped off into the road. Immediately, a car turned left from State into the road. I stopped and waved her on. She then stopped and waved me to cross the street. I declined and waved for her to go since I was on the side of the road and her car was in the middle. She waved me on again and I decided to make the decision for both of us by walking across the road. I was in front of her car when a truck turned left from State and came along side her. This truck and its driver had obviously seen that the woman's car was stopped but still decided to beat oncoming traffic and turn onto the road. He pulled along side of the woman, opened his door, and proceeded to yell at the woman and myself for being in the road. I immediately walked to the other side of the road and the woman drove off. The man then pulled into a nearby parking lot across the street and started yelling at me. He was of the opinion that I did not have the right of way because there was no painted crosswalk. I was causing a serious problem and he was going to yell at me like a maniac to fix it. I yelled back that I had the right of way because I had crossed at the corner. He then yelled at me some more. That is when I yelled that I only argued with rational people, turned around, and proceeded to continue walking to my apartment which was only 30 yards away. I think he was considering crossing the street when the woman who had stopped for me in the first place drove up. She had seen in her rear view window that the man was yelling and came to assist me. He then started yelling at her and insisting that she roll down her window so they could talk. She refused, yelled at him for yelling at me, and drove off. He then went into the bank. When I walked into my apartment, I told Camille what had happened and we expressed our shock at the mans rude behavior. An hour later, Sarah, Camille, and I went to Family Home Evening at Annie's house. We were led to her basement where I came face to face with the woman I had seen earlier in the car. It was the strangest coincidence. Our strange reaction to each other prompted everyone to ask what had happened. We, Tiffany and I, then proceeded to regale the group with the story of the rude man. It was pretty funny.
FHE was fun. We participated in skits in which we acted out stories of kindness. I played the wife of a man with leprosy. (My husband, Jake, was pretty cute.) After the serious part, we all mingled while we ate snacks. I had a good talk with Annie and was complimented by one of the Relief Society teachers. She said that, for someone so new, I was really fitting into the ward well. After FHE, a bunch of us decided to go to Baskin Robbins for ice cream and more socializing. Many topics were discussed, especially traveling to foreign lands. This something that I want to do more of. Chris discussed going to Germany and Africa. He is a very interesting guy. Anyway, now I am home. I so enjoy interesting days.
